The church was built from 1931st Till the 1940s,  close to the old church in 1835., According to the plans of architects Petar and Branko Krstic. It was designed by the architecture of Serbian-Byzantine style. As a general architectural conception, forms and polychromy of facades, this temple is the most similar to the monastery of Gracanica. Furnishing and decorating the temple was not yet complete.

In the southern part is a sarcophagus with the bones of Tsar Dusan, which are moved here from his endowment, the monastery of St.. Archangels near Prizren. On the north side is a tomb of white marble in which are the remains of Patriarch German Djoric.

King Aleksandar, the last king of Obrenovic dynasty, and his wife Draga Masin are buried in the crypt of the church. The church also houses one of the richest collections of Serbian icons from 18th and 19th centuries.
